    There are a lot of well deserved compliments to Cora here and I want to give props to the dad. He is so patient and helpful. He is engaging his daughter in his passion and spending time with her. There are so many good things about this that will strengthen their relationship. Also it sounds like the mum is filming, so a family activity. What a joy to behold.

      If I remember right we had one frame with comb on it in the bottom deep, and the top was all frames with foundation only. They combed all the frames in about 8- days and we added a queen excluder and honey super which they filled by harvest time. Thanks for the question. #RTBBF!

    Wow! Lovely long hive! I would like it if you could talk about your take on putting in frames that are just the plastic with a wax coat vs EXTRA WAX coatings! time considerations, success considerations, etc - (seems they would like the extra wax on to start with esp if busy with a flow!) Maybe you already have and I haven't caught that video. Thanks for your work with the bees! I learn all the time when I watch you and other beekeepers. Blessings ✨💖✨

    These are terrible. They will cook a hive in the summer. I lost two sitting next to regular hives. They were vented. They also leaked bees during transit. You couldn’t pay me to use them.

    Feeders have come a long way since "the olden times" when I kept bees. We didn't feed much since we tried real hard to ensure the bees had plenty of bee produced stores all year. But when we did, and if there was a chill in the air, the entrance feeder went on top of the bees in an empty box. Dad didn't like to feed them ice cold syrup.

    I love the slowness and gentleness of your removal, every tiny life matters, no bee is expendable, and you treat every bee with great value. I also love that there are no added effects, loud music, just you, your voice, your bees and the beautiful sounds of all the nature around you. THe key to being successful with your bees is being slow and gentle - there's no need to be rough, and you are a pleasure to watch. THANK YOU.

    You did that entire batch of frames faster than it took me to do one frame in the 60s and 70s. Plus we used wired wax foundation that was about a quarter inch short of the proper depth. I would have given my left arm for a jig like that with a stapler like that, 55-60 years ago. I'm too old and beat up to do bees these days but I love watching your videos. They are so educational that I feel like grinning whether I'm agreeing with you or learning something new. Stay safe and God bless.

    Quite a change from my day. We used mom's biggest butcher knife to do the uncapping. Used a fork in place of your scratcher. And squashed a lot of wax by hand to get the honey to drain out. Much more messy. We didn't sell honey. We did give a lot of it away to friends, neighbors, and family.

    Just remember that it's mostly the glue that holds the box joints together while the screws, nails or staples mostly just hold the joints stable while the glue finally dries or cures (depends on the exact type of "glue" you use). A little trick - drive staples in on a slightly diagonal orientation to the wood grain to discourage driving two "wedges" in a single line and, possibly, causing splitting of the wood.

    Hey John, I was watching you hive that monster swarm. That was a dandy, makes you wonder if maybe 2 swarms went together, but maybe not. I used to know a professional beekeeper that showed me the slickest way of hiving a swarm i ever saw, and that is how i have ever since. Put your hive on the ground and shack them off right in front. They will go right in. If you think they might not stay just put a frame of uncapped brood in the box. Takes about 10 min. I never saw anyone else do it that way, but i'v been doing it that way nearly 50 years.

    Really enjoyed watching you take care of that hive that swarmed. that is where i get most of my queens. If you can check a hive right after it swarms as a rule there will be 6 or more cells ready to hatch. It sure makes a split take off a lot faster than a walk away. You work'em exactly the same as me.

    I catch swarms for a living. It showed from the outset that the queen had not accepted the trap. All you had to do was to knock the swarm straight into the brood box & close it. When you do your splits, are you placing your spilt boxes in a separate location than your donor hive? Also do you always let them requeen themselves? Working on preparing for my first split

  • @gypsygem9395
    @gypsygem9395 14 днів тому

    Hi John, first time on your channel (I already commented earlier).. I have a question or two. Every single day this week I've had a swarm issue from my one WBC hive, yet the hive is still overflowing with bees. One brood box. two supers. Due to the daily swarms, on Wednesday I did a split of sorts whilst removing all the queen cells (which were all capped!) I could find throughout the hive bar one. I took 3 frames of eggs and brood, one with the remaining queen cell, shook off the nurse bees, then put them into another brood box (above the original with a queen excluder), replaced the supers and left them alone for 10 mins or so. I then moved the 3 frames (now covered in bees again) into a nuc, along with what I think was a frame of stores, a foundation and a frame feeder with a small amount of syrup. I placed this nuc about 4 metres away and closed it up for a few hours, and replaced the missing frames in the donor hive with foundation as I don't currently have any drawn comb. My questions relate to 1) should I have even done this given that with so many swarms already having issued from this hive, there would be a virgin queen in there and I might have caused her harm? (although having said that, yes there was still another swarm yesterday!) 2) should I have moved the WBC in its entirety and placed the nuc on the original site? Oh and 3) will the nuc be okay without the majority of the flying bees as they will presumably have returned to the original hive after I opened the nuc? I have observed flying bees coming and going from the nuc so I'm hoping that's a good sign and not a possibility I've got robbers! I've been a bee keeper for over 20 years but still consider myself somewhat a novice (this is my first time doing any sort of split) so any help will be very much appreciated. (sorry for the long comment! I've subscribed ❤)

      I've read through twice, it's a lot to answer in a text. I do think you were right addressing the hive an if I understood correctly you just have some waiting to do now. Remember while your waiting to reqeen factor in 4 extra days for that queen to mate and return. I hope this helps, thanks for watching.
